George Turner Sr.

George and sister-in-law Sallie Turner are seated on George's father's tombstone at Shoemaker Cemetery out side of Tazewell, Tennessee.

George's Story

George A Turner Sr. was born 20 Jul 1917 and died November 9, 1995. He was the son of  J. Alexander Turner  born June 8, 1870 and died Sept 26, 1926) and  Matilda Turner  born Aug 24, 1872 and died Nov 23, 1960.

George married Ruby Lee Stapleton November 11, 1938. She was born June 6, 1923 and died on November 14, 1986. They both were born in Claiborne County, Tennessee. Their first child, a daughter, Norma Jean was born and died in 1939. Then five sons were born, the first being, Lawrence Thomas, then Larry Roger, Charles Edward, Jimmy Ray, and last George A Turner, Jr. All the boys were born in Knox County, Knoxville, Tennessee. The Family moved from Knoxville to Lafayette, Indiana in 1966. Four of their sons retired with 20 years service in the US Navy. The picture of George Sr. in his CCC uniform. was submitted to this web site by all five of his sons and information was given by George's niece and husband, Jean and Arion Cole.

George was an active member of the CCC Corps in 1936. During WW II George served at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Georges next to youngest son, Jimmy said he thought the old picture was taken at Reel Foot Lake. This helped to indicate the Company he was enlisted in.
 
Sallie Griffin Turner (pictured) was the daughter of Joe and Emily Shelton Griffin, born October 5, 1906. She was married to
Dayton Turner ( George's brother ) for 58 years. Sallie died at age 97. in 2003. Sallie and her sons made up the Turner Gospel and Bluegrass Group of Tazewell, Tennessee. Sally sang Gospel and Bluegrass with them for many years up until her recent death.

Sallie and Dayton's son Buster, sang and recorded  the song, Leave Well Enough Alone in 1955 and presently, he and his brothers hosts a Saturday show on WTAZ-LP 98.3 in New Tazewell Tennessee * (bluegrass, classic country and gospel music)

All of this family,  are a patriotic and musical family with a love of God and country. Tennessee's best.
