James Byron Rose built the original Myrtle Springs Telephone Company in about 1916 or 1917. He had worked as a telephone repair person for many years installing and repairing telephone systems for the surrounding communities and other counties taking my grandmother Clemmie Price Rose with him in a wagon, something like a 1900's horse drawn home. My grandmother  died in 1916, leaving  three children to raise. In 1917 he met and married my step grandmother who also had been widowed, Mertie Morris Constant. They had two children. The telephone exchange was sold for a few months in the early 1920's and re-purchased by our grandfather Rose. He operated the telephone system until his death in 1926, leaving the exchange to Mertie and the children. Mertie owned and operated the exchange until 1947 with the exception of a few months in the early 1930's. My mother said she worked for a time on the switchboard before she was married. This phone book was reproduced by my uncle Jack Ray Rose October 7, 1989 in memory of our grandparents dedication as pioneers in the telephone communication industry in the Van Zandt county areas of High, Hayden, Turner, Bethleham, Highland and Blue Springs. It was his desire that you may have a nostalgic moment as you reflect on the names, telephone numbers and advertisements listed on the following twelve pages.
